HISTORY

WHAT IS THE LITERACY COULCIL?

The Marshall - Harrison County Literacy Council was started in April, 1989, by a group of concerned citizens who saw the need for an Adult Education program in Harrison County. Adult Basic Education was offered first, then English as a Second Language was added as well as pre-GED instruction. Math Instruction is also available.

The center serves some 200 students annually. These students meet one-on-one with trained volunteer tutors twice weekly for an hour at a time.

All instructional materials are provided free of charge and support is available from the director and staff.

Goals are established and frequent assessments are administered to monitor the progress of each student.
